2024 Newsletter Term 4: week 2

SMMC Admin

Dear parents,

The Australian Classical Education Society website provocatively asks, Why are our schools subject to social and political fads rather than teaching to time-tested methods? Don't our children deserve to learn truth, goodness and beauty over competing relativistic claims? Isn't there a higher standard for learning in Australia?

Reacting to these questions, I felt like the over-enthusiastic student in the '70s sitcom Welcome Back Cotter, wildly raising my hand to declare an answer to the third question, "Mr Cotter, there is, there is!" As I often say to new families, all roads lead to Albury for parents who want a school that discovers, nurtures and refines the transcendentals of truth, beauty and goodness in its students. It is literally our motto.

I have spent much of the first two weeks of the term meeting prospective kindergarten students and new families. The Noah's Ark drawing I use as a basis for conversation and basic skills gives me an opportunity to get to know the pre-schooler at the cusp of a lengthy career as a student. But what I secretly (so don't tell anyone!) enjoy most is seeing mum and dad out of the corner of my eye holding their breath as their little one takes the stage.

It is such a privilege to welcome new students, their parents and siblings into our community. Hospitality remains the most important but under-rated part of being a member of this community.

Thanks for your support.

Warm regards,

Ian Smith

Principal
