Dear parents,
Many of us have been dismayed at a couple of recent events in the US - I am speaking about the incident on the train and the death of Charlie Kirk. Each case has impacted at two levels: first, that of horror at what has happened to the individuals involved and, second, the occasion of deep reflection on the broader culture.
One of Charlie Kirk's characteristics, one which ultimately put him in harm's way, but which we must nonetheless continue to foster, is the value of interpersonal contact.
I commented at the recent parent night that a recent study found that the top three uses teenagers made of AI was for companionship, therapy and direction in life. In response, we find ourselves purposefully compensating for the intrusion of technology in a kind of race to outrun it by fortifying meal times, outdoor play and catching up with friends.
Year 10 students are, as I write, undertaking their second of two training days for the Peer Support Program. I was delighted to see them still absorbed in the activities of the first day when I poked my head in at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. A newly-discovered confidence and sense of mission gripped their countenance and encouraged their principal.
At a time when technology is invading every aspect of life and a resistance to traditional values is hyped in the media, perhaps one of Charlie's legacies may turn out to be the highlighting of the most basic gift God has given us: each other.
Thanks for your support.
Warm regards,
Ian Smith
Principal
